The cold winter months sees us wanting to take refuge inside our warm homes, cranking on the heaters to keep the winter cold out. To ensure you survive the winter months, with minimal impact in your home heating, here are some important factors to take into account.
Using your system for both summer and winter, it is important to consider getting it serviced pre the new season. Especially if you’re been using your system almost daily. There will be natural wear and tear, and this obviously increases with the volume of use.
Before you eagerly start that heater, be sure to do some around the home checks. Check your heater is free from dust, located in areas away from flammable items such as curtains, bedlinen, cloths, table cloths, etc.
Make sure your smoke detectors have updated batteries. Ensure your powerpoints are not overloaded with multiple appliances and equipment, as this puts extract pressure on your power outlet and can result in a power shortage.
Whilst there is nothing more comforting than a beautiful warm room, make sure you do have some form of air flow, as a room that doesn’t can result in the air overdrying. Which can result in you becoming dehydrated and drowsy. It can also cause skin irritations for some people. Low humidity in a room can also dry and cause cracks in woodwork and wood furniture. When a room holds dry air it is less effective in holding heat.
It is always important to keep your eye on your appliances and be aware of any warning signs that a service or professional check may be needed. For example: if your heater keeps turning on and off randomly, be sure to turn it off at the power inlet and call a professional. Do not leave it running, especially if you’re not home or have gone to bed.
One of the most common defects with heaters in winter months, especially when not regularly serviced, is carbon monoxide leaks. If your system is over 10 years old and hasn’t had a service or check out in the last couple of years, then make it a priority.
Our lives and home change. You may have been pre-kids when you bought your home and now have 2 kids but a heater unit that just doesn’t suit the home needs. Consider whether upgrading your system is needed. Often an investment in a new unit, can be more cost effective than using a heating system that isn’t suited to the home’s environment.
